The "Pendant" legend is an urban legend revolving around the 2011 action role-playing game Dark Souls.
Description
At the beginning of the game, players can choose one of eight different special items as a starting gift. Shortly after the game's release, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game's director, said in various interviews that players would be wise to choose an item known as the Pendant for their starting gift, as opposed to the Master Key, which opens a good percentage of doors in the game. This is despite the fact that the Pendant has no immediately recognizable uses. This led players to hypothesize that there was secretly some hidden quality that the Pendant possessed. When pressed on the issue, Miyazaki refused to disclose details on the Pendant's usage(s).
There actually is one concrete usage for the Pendant. Trading it to Snuggly the crow nets the player a Souvenir of Reprisal, which can be used to level up in the Blade of the Darkmoon Covenant. Despite this, fans were adamant that there was something more to the Pendant, especially considered that there are multiple other chances to obtain it if the player had not chosen it as their starting gift. Theories ranged from unlocking an alternate ending to unlocking an alternate Covenant.
The most common fan theory regarding the Pendant's hidden use involves finding the Darkmoon Séance Ring in the Catacombs and then making your way to Anor Londo. Next, players need to use the ring near the second bonfire to cause a statue of Gwyn to disappear, revealing a secret passage to a boss fight with Dark Sun Gwyndolin. After slaying the boss, players will be able to find three chests at the end of the boss hallway. Two of these chests contain the Sunlight Blade and the Brass Armor, respectively, but the third chest is empty. According to the fan theory, if the player drops the Pendant into the empty chest and then reloads the game, the game will begin to produce strange glitches. Attempts to perform this method have repeatedly come up empty-handed. [1]
In a 2012 interview with IGN, Miyazaki confessed that his teasing of the Pendant the previous year was a prank.
