The "Lost Nero Family" legend is an urban legend revolving around the 2000 role-playing game Final Fantasy IX.
Description
In early 2013, a GameFAQs user named The_Kusabi_ posted a thread claiming to have discovered a hidden mission that had gone undetected by the fanbase for 13 years. The quest allegedly involved the Neros, a family of ten that inhabited Lindblum. The_Kusabi_ outlined the instructions for completing the quest, instructions he claimed he saw in a Japanese guide to the game. At the beginning of Disc 4, there is a cutscene involving Zenero and Benero, two members of the Nero family. After this cutscene, players must travel to Memoria until they encounter either a cutscene or a boss. These are considered important events, at least as far as this mission is concerned. Every time you encounter either a cutscene or a boss, you are to return to the Nero family hideout, where you will be greeted with a cutscene with a new Nero family member. Supposedly, triggering one of these special events and immediately returning to Lindblum enough times will reward you with a special item.
This rumor is indeed true. After the cutscene with Penero, the player character Zidane will comment on the large size of the family. Entering the Nero hideout will reveal a new treasure chest containing a Protect Ring. Oddly enough, watching a cutscene or fighting a boss in Memoria after completing the Nero family sidequest will cause the sidequest to restart, showing the initial cutscene with Benero and Zenero when the player returns to Lindblum. However, because nine events must be triggered to complete the quest and there are only 17 possible trigger events, it is impossible to do the quest twice.
