The "'''{{PAGENAME}}'''" legend is an urban legend revolving around the 1996 3-D platforming game ''Super Mario 64''.

In the courtyard of Princess Toadstool’s castle, there is a fountain surrounded by Boos that is outfitted with a statue of a large star. This star-shaped statue is accompanied by a small plaque whose inscription is illegible due to graphical limitations. However, the inscription is still said by many to read “L is real 2401”. The meaning of this phrase, assuming that the claim is true, is unknown, but the most common interpretation is that it is a clue hinting towards Luigi being playable in the game.

One theory claims that the number 2401 is a reference to the date that the North American version of ''Paper Mario'' was released (a date which was actually February 5, 2001, not February 4, 2001, thus making the connection unlikely). In addition, the customary way to write dates in Japan places the year first, followed by the month and then the day (thus making it 0124.)

The most commonly cited method for unlocking Luigi is collecting every coin in the game (2672 in total) and returning to the courtyard star statue, where Luigi would appear. This is complicated, however, by the fact that two coins (one in Tiny-Huge Island and one Snowman’s Land) are impossible to collect without cheating due to being hidden inside the level geometry. However, even if the coins are collected using hacking or glitches, collecting all of the game’s coins does not unlock Luigi.

*Prior to the 2020 Gigaleak, their are very bit of truth to the legend, is that the Co-op code remnants are still left in the game files and still enable them, but on a unfinished state, thus was possible at one point, that Luigi was originally be appear in the game, as a playable character.
*In 2020, it was discovered by the Gigaleak, that Luigi was originally planned to be in the game, and he even hint in at one point, survived up until the early beta, before coming scrapped during its phase, as his model, textures, and even his voicelines was found in the beta source code. 
**Through, it's still unclear if the beta version of the Peach Castle's courtyard plaque, was contain a different text for its plaque from the finalized version, or its the same one. As well, if this effect on association with the legend itself.
***Another thing that is to be noted is that the GigaLeak occured on 23 July 2020, 24 years and 1 month (2401) after ''Super Mario 64'' was released.
