The "Ghost Cars" legend is an urban legend revolving around the 2004 wide-open sandbox game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Description
In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, there are rumors of “ghost cars”, ethereal driver-less cars that can be found in the wooded area known as Back O’ Beyond. Many of those who claimed to have encountered the ghost cars soon after the game was released claimed that the ghost cars were aggressive, invulnerable to all damage, and capable of chasing down the player. While these parts of the rumors have not been substantiated, these ghost cars actually do appear in the game to an extent. There is a glitch that causes certain cars known as “Glendales” to spawn on the side of a steep hill, where gravity causes them to slide to the bottom. This gives the impression that the cars are driving by themselves. Another glitch on the PlayStation 2 version of the game further fuels this rumor, since it can cause the car in the Back O’ Beyond to spawn inside a nearby tree, making it seem more intangible and therefore ghostly.
In the Halloween 2021 event of GTA Online, there featured a ghost car based off of the movie Christine by Stephen King, the car would randomly spawn near a player in the lobby and stalk them, before turning its lights red, engulfing in flames, and attempting to run over the player once they leave their vehicle.
