The "Ashbringer" legend is an urban legend revolving around the 2004 MMORPG World of Warcraft.

Description

Soon after the game's release, an orange-tagged (incredibly rare) weapon called "Ashbringer" was discovered in the game's code, and its stats were incredibly high. This led players to believe that the Ashbringer could be found in-game. In the Eastern Plaguelands, an NPC named Caretaker Alen said, among other things, "The what-bringer? Oh, ASHbringer? Never heard of it ... What? Stop bothering me!" when interacted with. Patch 1.3.0 introduced the Dire Maul, a dungeon inhabited by the Shen'dralar and the library they inhabited. This library was filled with NPCs who would make cryptic references to the Ashbringer.

In Patch 1.5.0, one of the drops players could find in the newly released battlegrounds was a guide to fishing that read "...and so that's where you'll find the legendary sword of the Scarlet Highlord, Ashbringer. Ain't it amazing what you run into in an ordinary day of fishin?" This led to speculation that Ashbringer could be found by fishing. Nothing was ever found. However, in Patch 1.6.0, the Blackwing Lair area was added. Several of the NPCs in the Shen'dralar's library mentioned in passing that their leader, Prince Tortheldrin, knew the location of the fabled sword and would tell players if they could kill and bring back the head of the dragon Nefarian (who lived in Blackwing Lair). However, players that did so didn't receive any clues from the prince as to where the sword was.

Trivia

  • The sword was finally added in the Legion expansion pack in the form of the Retribution Paladin artifact weapon, but it was not in the game properly before then.
